The latest instalment in the Guardian’s Top 10 Novels series features fiction told in a single day, chosen by author James Clammer. He suggests that ‘circadian’ novels – stories set within a 24 hour period – allow ‘new possibilities for compression’ and ‘opportunities for strange amplifications’. William Golding’s Pincher Martin is included at Number 10 in the list, although Clammer points out the novel’s central riddle makes classification difficult. Beware – spoilers are in the article!
