Us Edition of Lord of the Flies the Graphic Novel Published Today

By: Nicola Presley

Published today in the US – Lord of the Flies: The Graphic Novel!

Seventy years ago, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies was first published in the U.S. Since then, the seminal novel has sold millions of copies and had an enduring influence on public consciousness, becoming canonical in school syllabi and pop culture alike. This fall, Eisner-nominated comic author and animator Aimée de Jongh brings new life to the story with the first graphic novel adaptation: Lord of the Flies: The Graphic Novel (Penguin Classics). Utilising direct quotations from Golding’s original text, this reimagining retains the haunting reflections of human nature that made the novel so iconic – Booklist calls it ‘an adaptation perfectly capturing the ghastly violence and agonizing emotion of the original.’ The graphic novel also includes a note from the artist as well as samples of early character sketches and scene development.

With this new edition, De Jongh brings Lord of the Flies to colour in close collaboration with the Golding family. His daughter, Judy Golding, says, ‘My dad was an enormously visual writer and what [de Jongh] has done is just beautiful’ (The Guardian).
