Lord of the Flies: The Graphic Novel wins Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Medal

By: Nicola Presley

Aimée de Jongh has won the Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Medal for illustration for Lord of the Flies: The Graphic Novel!

We are absolutely delighted that Aimée de Jongh has been awarded a Carnegie Medal for her wonderful graphic novel adaptation of Lord of the Flies. This award is extra special as it is chosen by young people ‘shadowing’ the official judging process, debating and choosing their own winners from the shortlist. The Carnegies provided the following reflections from their young judges:

Leinahtan from the College Francais Love Books shadowing group said it was “some of the most mind-blowing & jaw-dropping illustrations” they had ever seen, with Keval from Willow Book Whisperers calling it “a true masterpiece”. Arshdeep from Sale High Readers praised the way “the illustrations add a new layer of depth and emotion to the story” with many shadowers confirming that the graphic novel format helped them understand the story, including Bella from TGGS Carnegie Readers who said the artwork helped the story “come to life”.

De Jongh wins a medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice. The Carnegies celebrate outstanding achievement in children’s writing and illustration respectively and are unique in being judged solely by librarians. Beth O’Brien won the Carnegie Medal for Writing and Kate Rolfewon the Carnegie Medal for Illustration.
