The tragic fire at Notre Dame prompted a number of articles about Golding’s The Spire, a book about one man’s obsession with building a spire on a cathedral. Matthew D’Ancona mentioned Dean Jocelin’s obsession in the Evening Standard and Jay Merrick wrote a wonderful piece about the hallucinatory power of cathedrals in the Independent.
Ian McEwan discussed being introduced to William Golding and other great authors in The Big Issue.
In an Irish Times article examining the literary legacy of Robinson Crusoe, Brian Maye cited Lord of the Flies as an example of a ‘stinging counterblast’ to both The Coral Island and Robinson Crusoe.
