Monique Roffey on The Inheritors

Costa Award-winner Monique Roffey has spoken about her relationship with Golding’s second novel The Inheritors. In an interview with the Guardian, Roffey was asked to name the book that has had the most influence on her writing. She replied that Golding’s imagination in constructing language and thought for his Neanderthal people ‘gave [her] ideas for how [she] could write a mermaid, how she might speak’. Roffey’s The Mermaid of Black Conch was published in 2020, and won the Costa Book of the Year Award.

Roffey joins a number of writers and broadcasters recently acknowledging the impact of The Inheritors. These include Thomas Keneally, Nina Allan, Una McCormack and the Backlisted Pod team.
