To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the publication of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, Eva Waite-Taylor in the Independent has created a list of ‘essential’ novels that ‘present a similar moral or political idea’. Lord of the Flies is one of the recommended reads as it ‘allegorises the failings of European rulers by imagining them as the schoolboys fighting over a tropical island’. Other books on the list include Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go.
