Fyre Festival and Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is once again in the news, following the recent disastrous Fyre Festival. The luxury festival, with some tickets priced at $12,000, hit the headlines after attendees reported inadequate food, poor accommodation, and a lack of support from organisers. The festival was eventually cancelled and people were evacuated from the island in the Bahamas.

Festival-goers have issued lawsuits against the organisers, with court papers revealing that the festival ‘was closer to The Hunger Games or Lord of the Flies than Coachella’.

The internet responded in typical fashion to events at Fyre Festival, and Lord of the Flies frequently appeared as an allegory. Brandwatch featured an article with quotations from the novel to sum up the festival experience, and the Fyre Festival sub-reddit was awash with Lord of the Flies allusions, as reported by Mashable. Áine Cain produced a funny series of tweets for McSweeney’s, using characters and plot points from Lord of the Flies to portray the event.

One positive point: at least Roger or Jack Merridew weren’t guests at the festival…
